Ok 21 is the legal age. However , you can travel to other places where the legal age is significantly lower.
You can join the military at 18.
Is it OK for a soldier who is under 21 to visit a foreign port and if they are within legal age for that place... is it OK for them to drink?
2 things come to my mind... Yes, its legal for them there.... BUT.. their still an american citizen and abide by our rules..
What do you think?

Well I think the drinking age should be lowered , or the recruitment age should be risen, if you are old enough to die for your country you should be able to drink, in other words have all the freedoms you are fighting for

I agree we need ages to be the same all over the US. The drinking rules in other countries should apply if they visit there. They are either travelling abroad and responsible for what they do...or they are in the military and as culp eluded to if they are old enough to carry a weapon and fight for our country they are old enough to carry a beer. That said the USMC made it way easy for both my kids to do nothing but drink on off time....even though there are rules in place that put under 21 on the first level of the housing.

I have a hard enough time tolerating 21 year old drunks in bars and parties..especially when they become loudmouth and invincible.I think 18-20 year olds have enough access to alcohol to get them by until the age of 21..when they have a chance to mature a bit.
joining the military is a choice in life..if one chooses to go to college at the age of 18,does that make them smart enough to be of drinking age ?

If you go to another country, you have to obey their laws. You get a speeding ticket you have to pay, if you're able to drink at 18, well by all means fucking drink. Just be sure you can handle whatever comes of it.

that's what I meant by consequences Stone. LD...all I meant was if they are old enough to die for my freedoms elseswhere who are we to say they are not old enough to drink. You need to visit more bars...lots and lots of people over 30 that are obnoxious too hon.

well its a thing of maturity. have you seen how most of them act? they arent responsible enough to not make stupid decisions at that age usually. and when they do fuck up it usually mean people like you and me lose there wife or mom or sister ect or your life.

I don't give a shit. You can make laws all you want but that doesn't mean that most people will abide by them.
Would that mean that if an American visited Amsterdam then they wouldn't be allowed to smoke pot even though it's legal? That whole line of thought is ridiculous.
Honestly, how many of you waited until your 21st birthday before you tried alcohol?
It seems to me as people get older they start getting a self righteous my shit don't stink attitude when they know damned well that they did worse when they were kids. Why is it ok for you to experiment and make mistakes but it's not ok for your children?

I completely understand that, and i really do sympathize, but when it comes down to it after they are a legal adult you have to let them learn things like this for themselves. Give them advice if you must but let them decide what to do with that advice. Otherwise in my opinion it's just smothering.

you know...we start at an early age to allow them to make little decisions and suffer smaller consequences, age related decisions so that WHEN they are on their own and we aren't there to watch, give advice, help and even sometimes fix things for them they will have learned HOW to make decisions and how to act and to take the consequences or at least know what they are before they decide. The 30-40 and older people that are those obnoxious drunks were never allowed to make those decisions coming up. The learn from my mistakes does not work well.

I think they should lower the drinking age. At 18 people are old enough, and thought to be responsible enough to make the decision to not just join the military and put their lives on the line for our freedom, but they are also of age to vote and have a huge impact on who will be running our country. They certainly should be given all freedoms that come with the "officially an adult" age. Lets face it, if they want to drink...they are doing it anyways...legal or not. But they are much more dangerous when they have to sneak around to do it. Going to any extent not to be caught...putting other people's lives at risk.

I don't think prohibition relates in any way to minors drinking. How many minors do you know making their own whiskey?

In San Diego, military is allowed to drink at 18 on base.
They do this to prevent the guys and gals from going into Mexico to drink and possibly get into trouble.

The year I turned 18, the drinking age went to 21. So, I drank anyway. Not a year has gone by that I haven't had a drink.

No doubt, had my first beer when I was 12. Took about two beers and I was plastered, good times.

What do you think?I don't think a soldier should ever drink. It is illegal for me to even carry a gun if I an drinking. It is no different for them either. Also, they are there to do a job, not drink. I can't drink on the job.

Me neither.
It pissed me off that when drinking was legal at 18, and I turned 18 it went to 19.
Then, just before I turned 19 it went to 21.
I was thinking"Fuck, by the time I reach 80, drinking age will be 81...fuck it...I'm drinking anyway"
I think the first beer you drink is like a right of passage. A kind of stepping stone on the way to adult hood.
Too many stones make for a rocky road through life though.........

I dunno. I don't think so. Like just about every neighbor hood, I had a store in mine that sold to minors, so I never went without.
I kinda felt "cool" for being able to get beer (under age) and being able to have it at the beach parties.
Maybe if I'd have been doing it legally, it wouldn't have had the same impact on me?
I really don't know.....
