Per Gig's request, I've forked this thread.
no more than feeding them an unhealthy diet of fatty fast foods, obese children and diabetic children who grow up to be obese adults with heart disease etc etc ....
a whole lot more than smoking contributes to most who have lung disease and cancer....
I don't give my 2 cents very often on here. Only when something affects me or pisses me off. So I read this comment like 5 times trying to see exactly how ya meant it and maybe I'm just taking it the wrong way.....................................BUT for you to use the words child abuse about obesity or diabetes...hmmm...that 1 really hits home. I'm sure ya don't know, but my entire world was ripped apart and my 5 year old almost died last Oct. WHY...her pancreas failed...she is diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic and her life will depend on insulin forever. NOT BECAUSE OF SOMETHING THAT I DID OR DID NOT DO AS A MOTHER...I just found out on Friday that my son has a deteriorating pancreas and he too will be insulin dependent soon. I am a damn good mother. I devote my entire life to my children. They are my world. Diabetics break down foods differently and insulin causes weight gain. Everytime their blood glucose is high...acids are produced that eat away at fats and muscles. THE HEART IS A MUSCLE!!! So when you hear stories about a diabetic with heart disease....,it's because their high sugars caused by lack of insuin from the failed pancreas have eaten away at it...just as the acids have eaten away at every other muscle in their poor bodies. The younger the diagnosis...the earlier they will suffer the painful and deadly effects of their disease. Rather than classify a person...educate yourself. A cure is the only hope that my children have at a normal life expectancy.
Now for the smoking bullshit....yep causes tons of diseases. Let's face it...breathing causes diseases. We have fucked up our world. It is so polluted that we can't breath without taking in toxins. Blame it on Cigarettes if ya must. Every disease supposedly caused by smoking is found in people who have never smoked...people who are never exposed to 2nd hand smoke.. and in chain smokers too. It's like every other disease...they give it 10 causes and when ya don't fit any of them...they make up a new cause.

You did.
She was talking about parent s who do this to their kids:
774
But hey, as for your worries about the health of your children as they grow up, just keep an eye on their blood sugar, inject as needed and make sure they get a lot of exercise.
They'll be as healthy as horses (although horses aren't really all that healthy...I dunno why they use that particular animal to convey health)
Take a look at Tom Platz. He is a diabetic. Proper diet, taking care of his disease and a LOT of exercise made him a contender for Mr Olympia.
775
I guess what I'm saying is that just because a kid is diagnosed as a diabetic that doesn't automatically limit them to a life of frailty.

Really...she was...cause being an unhealthy fat child who's parent just loads on the grease and sugar for is completely different than being a child with a degenerative disease that eats away at your muscles every day of your life...the earlier the diagnosis...the shorter the life expectancy.
As for your medical advice...thanks so much. I go to the Dr.s about 5 times a month with her. Blood sugars are not always so easy. Ya see....ya never want to give too much cause lows cause comas & death(fast way to go)...where as highs eat away at your fat and muscles(slow way to go). Dr.s choose the slow way! Keep an eye on blood sugar??? We check sugar levels 6times a day and treat with insulin between 6 & 10 times a day....I set an alarm for every 3 hours at night to check her glucose levels!!!!
Are you a diabetic who had early onset? Don't begin to try to educate me about something...unless you have walked in the shoes.

Jeez, chick.
You ain't a little touchy about shit are ya?
I wasn't trying to "educate" you.
If anything I was trying to alleviate some of your angst. You know...show a success in life with the disease instead of focusing on the negative.
One thing you're right about:
"being an unhealthy fat child who's parent just loads on the grease and sugar for is completely different than being a child with a degenerative disease
Since Tawni said:

I STILL say you took her wrong. She wasn't talking about your kid with onset of diabetes due to a failed pancreas.
As for your question about MY situation with diabetes, no. I, personally, don't have diabetes.
My father died from it after suffering with it throughout my childhood. Not a pretty picture and I'll save you the gory details.
Kinda why I stated what I did about staying on top of it.
As for your shitty attitude and condescension, I empathize with your situation.

I think your little crop of her post completely missed the mention of diabetic children.
Point is....Diabetes is not something that anyone causes. It is not based on diet or environment. It is just something that happens. And we drew some shit luck and got it. I will do the best I can forever to monitor my children and care for them...keeping them as healthy as possible for as long as possible. But when the effects of their disease takes its toll...it will be no ones fault either. It will not be because I did not do my very best to manage their sugars. It will not be due to any sort of neglect. Or "abuse". It will be the realities of "a degenerative disease".

If you take it in context, instead of just zeroing in on the word Diabetic, it's pretty clear she's saying that malnourishment is the abuse (causing diabetes) and not the fact that a kid is diabetic...
Who the fuck would even say a kid that was born with a defective pancreas was the product of abuse in the first place?
That's just flat defies logic.
I realize you're smarting because of the position you're in and the lot you've been given.
But, that doesn't mean that everyone that mentions diabetes is blaming you for the fact that your kid has it.
Point is....Diabetes is not something that anyone causes. It is not based on diet or environment.
Really....
Many recent studies have shown a direct link between obesity and the diagnosis of type II diabetes, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Also known as adult onset diabetes, type II is increasingly being diagnosed in overweight children and adolescents. In this type of diabetes, the body produces insulin, but interference from the complications of obesity doesn’t allow the body to use it as it should.
Chronic alcoholism also contributes to Diabetes...Doc.
I realize that the above stipulates type II. Since she didn't, nor did you for that matter, differentiate between types , a little "education" was called for.
But when the effects of their disease takes its toll...it will be no ones fault either. It will not be because I did not do my very best to manage their sugars.
Ahh. Now I see where your anger and instantly jumping to conclusions comes from.
I'm sure you're sticking to the regiment and doing everything you can.
Any good mother would do the same.
Now. If you're kid was a fat hog and got diabetes type II because of it, I could kinda understand you being on the defensive.
But, since it was a genetic defect and out of your control, you can be a little less sensitive over someone mentioning fat fucks that get it and the shit bag parents the feed them into it.

Type II...exactly...which is found in elderly and unhealthy adults........not in youth...not in those poor heavy children that you posted. Did ya ever stop to think that maybe they have some huge underlying medical condition causing their obesity. I eat fast food. I am completely healthy and quite thin. And I am willing to bet that their are plenty of other normal size children that live the same lifestyle as those obese ones.

Did you completely miss the whole quote about "type II is increasingly being diagnosed in overweight children and adolescents"?
Those poor heavy children?
Are you serious? One looks like the Michelin man, the other's not far behind and they're eating at McDonalds...
Maybe they have a medical condition?
Let's go with that....
If the kid has a medical condition affecting his metabolism and causing him to be obese....
don't ya think McDONALD'S should be the LAST place he should have his ass parked for a meal?
That maybe some whole grains, fruit, lean meat and exercise should be in order instead of trans fats and cholesterol?
The fact is most kids today have their asses parked in front of the tv, game console, computer etc instead of being outside getting the exercise they need along with having a completely unhealthy diet.
I'm not saying a thyroid problem here and there CAN'T cause obesity....I'm saying more often than not it's a shitty diet and lack of any exercise that causes it.
And....if the fat kid I posted DID have a medical problem causing his obesity...his parents are ABSOLUTELY guilty of abuse for purposely feeding him McDonalds.

"Type 2 (insulin resistant) Diabetes
Usually have sugar in the urine but no ketones
As many as 30% will have some ketones in the urine at diagnosis
About 5% will have ketoacidosis at diagnosis
Little or no thirst and no increased urination
*Strong family history of diabetes
*45 - 80% have at least one parent with diabetes
*diabetes may span many generations of family members
*74 - 100% have a first or second degree relative with diabetes
*Typically from African, Hispanic, Asian, or American Indian origin
*Disorders likely to cause insulin resistance are common
Overweight at diagnosis; little or no weight loss
About 90% of children with type 2 have dark shiny patches on the skin (acanthosis nigricans), which are most often found between the fingers and between the toes and on the back of the neck ("dirty neck") and in axillary creases.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Puberty has been identified as important in the development of type 2 diabetes in children. Changes in hormone levels during this period cause insulin resistance and decreased insulin action. Therefore it is quite understandable that type 2 diabetes in children most often occurs during mid-puberty. Type 2 diabetes is extremely complex. There is an underlying genetic susceptibility."
OK Nik...ya caused me to do a lot more reading...Diabetes in Children(any type) is quite rare. But type II is almost unheard of...however...I have found cases where it is being found in adolescents. Not very common and they have not even proven it to be. They believe it may be type II.....
"Types of Diabetes in Children
Type 1 diabetes (diabetes caused by a defect in the immune system which leads to destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells) has classically always been considered the only type of diabetes in children except in rare instances. Indeed, type 1 diabetes was called "juvenile diabetes" in the past. However, some recent findings suggest that somewhere between 8 - 45% of newly diagnosed children with diabetes, may indeed have type 2 (insulin deficiency due to other factors). At the time of diagnosis, it may not be possible for the classification to be correctly determined, because symptoms and findings often are similar."
I would point out to you how much the family history shows up with diagnosis. It plays a huge part in type II diabetes. Also surprisingly "Typically from African, Hispanic, Asian, or American Indian origin ". So...not the fat kids in your picture. I would also point out..."Disorders likely to cause insulin resistance are common" Not just some fat unhealthy kid....TONS of underlying factors....AND not even proven at this point... "may indeed have". That says to me...or may indeed NOT have!!!

Do ya know that he eats there daily or just that some asshole thought it was ironic that the "fat kids" were having a cheeseburger and snapped a pic. It is not easy to be a parent and it's even harder when your child has to live a life that is a little different. My daughter should stick to a good eating regimen with lower carbs and sugar intake...but ya know what...she is just a kid...so sometimes I allow her to splurge and have a candy bar or a banana split. Does it make me a bad mother??? NO!!! Can you imagine being a child...watching all the other kids have a candy bar or cheeseburger and not ever being allowed to have it? The fast foods and sweets are not good for anyone...but we could walk into McDonalds everyday and not take a 2nd look at the 100s of average people in there filling their bodies with poisoness foods....but god for bid it be a fat person cause then we all stare and judge..."haha...no wonder your so fat...go have a salad". "Signs and symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome vary, but most people with the disorder have upper body obesity, a rounded face, increased fat around the neck, and relatively slender arms and legs. Children tend to be obese with slowed growth rates.
Other signs appear in the skin, which becomes fragile and thin, bruises easily, and heals poorly. Purple or pink stretch marks may appear on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, and breasts. The bones are weakened, and routine activities such as bending, lifting, or rising from a chair may lead to backaches and rib or spinal column fractures.
Cushing’s syndrome occurs when the body’s tissues are exposed to high levels of cortisol for too long. Many people develop Cushing’s syndrome because they take glucocorticoids—steroid hormones that are chemically similar to naturally produced cortisol—such as prednisone for asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other inflammatory diseases. Glucocorticoids are also used to suppress the immune system after transplantation to keep the body from rejecting the new organ or tissue.
Other people develop Cushing’s syndrome because their bodies produce too much cortisol. Normally, the production of cortisol follows a precise chain of events. First, the hypothalamus, a part of the brain about the size of a small sugar cube, sends corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) to the pituitary gland. CRH causes the pituitary to secrete adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), which stimulates the adrenal glands. When the adrenals, which are located just above the kidneys, receive the ACTH, they respond by releasing cortisol into the bloodstream.
Cortisol performs vital tasks in the body including
helping maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function
reducing the immune system’s inflammatory response
balancing the effects of insulin, which breaks down glucose for energy
regulating the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats "
Here is 1 example of an obese person that is not fat simply because of their lifestyle...they are sick...and lookie there...this disease messes with cortisol which balances the effects of insulin...Wow!!! Now the poor kid is fat and diabetic and never had even 1 cheeseburger!!!!

Get off your soap box before ya fall and hurt yourself.
I hope the candy you give your kid is diabetic candy....especially since you're checking sugar 5 times a day and fighting slow vs fast death.
Giving the kid shit that you know to be dangerous as a way to show your affection seems a little odd to me.
Let's hope she doesn't get an affectation for playing Russian roulette...oh wait..she kinda is by eating candy bars..
Jesus.
My mention of fat kids eating McDonalds was stated in a way to show that a kid with a metabolic problem needn't be adding to his problems with improper diet.
You wanna make it out to be about making fun of fat kids...so be it.
The fact that most "fat kids" are not that way because of a health problem is still a just that...a fact.
You're right about one thing though...they won't be just a "fat kid" anymore...
They'll be a kid with an unnecessary, higher risk of:
Type 2 diabetes can cause problems later in life that affect the eyes, kidneys, circulatory system, and the body’s ability to fight infection.
suffering from wear and tear of joints and bones due to their excess weight
cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure
Sleep apnea
Child obesity is a crisis in this country, but it is not a problem without a solution. When it comes to child obesity, doctors have plenty of healthy recommendations for parents that will ensure that their kids stay slim and trim.
So, getting to know a "fat kid" and accepting him/her as such is probably the single biggest disservice that you could possibly do to them.

Like I said, both kids are hogs.
IF they had a health problem, any responsible adult wouldn't be furthering the hazards of obesity by facilitating the problem.
Ever seen two fat kids with slim, fit parents?
On the RARE occasion that it is a medical problem, it's ever RARER for it to affect 2 kids and have slim parents.
Nope. 99% of the time when you see two fat kids, you see two fat assed parents.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common known genetic cause of life-threatening obesity in children. Although the cause is complex it results from an abnormality on the 15th chromosome. It occurs in males and females equally and in all races.............
In Utero:
Reduced fetal movement
Frequent abnormal fetal position
At Birth:
Often breech or caesarean births
Lethargy
Hypotonia
Feeding difficulties (due to poor muscle tone affecting sucking reflex)
Difficulties establishing respiration
Hypogonadism
Infancy:
Failure to thrive (continued feeding difficulties)
Delayed milestones/intellectual delay
Excessive sleeping
Strabismus
Scoliosis (often not detected at birth)
Childhood:
Speech delay
Poor physical coordination
Hyperphagia (over-eating) from age 2 - 4 years. Note change from feeding difficulties in infancy
Excessive weight gain
Adolescence:
Delayed puberty
Short stature
Obesity
Extremely flexible
Adulthood:
Infertility (males and females)
Hypogonadism
Sparse pubic hair
Obesity
Hypotonia
Learning disabilities/borderline intellectual functioning (but some cases of average intelligence)
Prone to diabetes mellitus
Extremely flexible
Here's another 1...fat and diabetic....they are born with the illness...but obesity doesn't show until adolescence....now mean people see them walking and shake their heads injudgement cause they're so fat...can't hardly walk....you're mumbling in your head....Go do some research...take a walk in their shoes...all of a sudden the judgement will end!

Fat people are unhealthy.
That's not MY opinion.... that's the modern medical science that's in.
For the very FEW that actually DO have an underlying medical condition....my heart goes out to them...until I see them putting shit into their bodies that is not only unhealthy but contributes to the problem.
Then I think they're just fucking ignorant.
I mean hey, lots of people enjoy cocaine but I don't have a problem abstaining.
So to say it's unrealistic that a person with health problems shouldn't deny themselves the guilty pleasure of what could very well kill them is fucking IDIOTIC!!

As for the diabetes in fat kids...I have read alot today and 1st thing is that they can not even be sure that it is type 1 or type 2. Secondly...they are not positive what causes either... and they are not sure if the obesity is causing the diabetes or an endocrinology problem(insulin) is causing the obestiy. Just get some facts before ya judge people...and questioning my parenting because I give my children occasional candy was completely ignorant. If you knew something about diabetes...you would know that modern medicine has decided that diabetic children should not have to follow a certain diet or restrict any foods. They can eat a normal diet as long as they are treated with insulin to compensate. If my kids stayed away from all sugars/carbs...then they would have more serious medical issues.

You haven't listened to word I've been saying.
I've already stated that a SMALL percentage of kids have issues that make them heavy. I just have no sympathy for the ones who STILL have no regards for their health by doing things contrary to what they should be doing to control the health problems that will result from their condition as they get older.

A "normal diet" is not fast foods and candy.
There are natural sugars you get from fruit and what not.
I never mentioned limiting carbs.
As for "getting some facts" it seems our discussion has caused YOU to go in search of some information today...now hasn't it?
Guess you didn't know as much as you thought you did when this started out.
I STILL say, controlling the diet and exercise is the best way for ANY kid, diabetic or not, to control their destinies and prevent future complications.
To say that all fat kids are just predestined to be that way and should be "understood" is completely moronic.
To tell you the truth, I don't single out fat people to dislike. The ones that stuff unhealthy shit into their faces while crying health issues as the cause just makes it a lot easier.
In my opinion, most people are too fucking stupid to be allowed to live.
As a general rule, I have disdain for most people.
Dumb mother fuckers are on the top of my "most hated" list.
Those who try to make me have sympathy for people who don't have the strength to control their own destinies come in second.

Just so you know...carbs turn into sugars in your body and as much as you need them...they are lingering sugars that are digested way slower and actually are much more likely to add on pounds than a candy bar. Things that go into your body as a sugar(such as juices and candy) have immediate effect on your blood sugar levels but are digested very quickly.
I don't say that it is okay or healthy for kids to live on fast foods and other unhealthy shit. But I do think that in moderation it is okay. The problem is that I met some "
fat kids" with average sized parents during a long stay at Children's hospital. And regardless of diet and exercise regimen...they were still fat. Finally at the age of 12 the poor boy was diagnosed with cushions disease. It is actually quite controllable and if people would stop focussing on the fact that the kids were fat...this boy could have been diagnosed years ago before the weight gain had taken a toll on his health. I stay in touch with his family still and since diagnosis he has lost 78 pounds. He is now just a chubby kid, but the damage has already been done.
Medical science changes every second. They find new diseases and cures. They learn more about existing diseases everyday...adding and removing causes and symptoms. I just think that with type 2 diabetes in children being so questionable.....maybe the diabetes is the underlying cause of the obesity and not a result of it...even the drs. are considering this. they are educated with all kinds of degrees. Do you think you know better than them?

This I already knew. Weight lifting when I was younger and all that.

As long as exercise is part of the regimen as well, I find no fault with that.
The problem is that I met some "
fat kids" with average sized parents ..... ....the poor boy was diagnosed with cushions disease. ....
So it goes back to him having an underlying health problem.
As I said earlier, of the kids that DON'T have that, when they're fat bodies, the parents generally are too.

No, I'm saying I knew more than YOU did about type II at the beginning of this.
Now you know more than you did at the beginning of this.
Aren't you happy you got pissed at me now?
Although Doctors may not be sure what causes type II, the do know that, without fail, it accompanies obesity and that the cases are being diagnosed in an alarmingly increasing rate.
Regardless, fat kids are not healthy.
Morbidly obese kids (like the one in the pic I posted) should not be dieting on McDonalds.

They looked like twins to me...maybe they both have the same genetic disorder.
"Although Doctors may not be sure what causes type II, the do know that, without fail, it accompanies obesity and that the cases are being diagnosed in an alarmingly increasing rate." Type 2 is the body's inability to use the insulin properly. It happens in all types of people. AND again I say...Drs. are not sure...they said symptoms "suggest" that it "may indeed" be type 2 diabetes.
I personally do not and can not believe that our world has changed so much since my childhood(i'm not that old) that kids are truly this fat simply because they do not eat healthy or exercise enough. I was raised by my grandmother who was too sick to get p and cook a meal...so I lived on processed boxed and canned foods as well as happy meals and I was a regular sized kid.
I understand that the diseases causing obesity are thought to be rare...but maybe our cruel world just focuses so much on the fat aspect of the sickness that they completely ignore all the other symptoms. They diagnose the kids as obese and put them on special diets and exercise programs...when they don't lose weight the drs. automatically assume that the parents are pieces of shit that are not enforcing drs. orders. Maybe if they ignored what they see in front of them and just listened for a minute...they would find a treatment plan that would work and these so called rare diseases would no longer be so rare.

So you honestly think obesity is, by and large, caused by disease and not over consumption of processed foods and inactivity?
Get serious.
The biggest difference between today and yester year is that kids didn't sit in front of the tv for an average of 8 hours per day.
They got outside and did things. Rode bikes, played jump rope, hide and seek etc.
Look up and down the streets once in a while. It's a virtual ghost town compared to pre playstation and 600 channels era.
The fact that, as a whole, the US is getting fatter by the year supports laziness as a cause and not "disease".
Gadgets to minimize effort, apathy towards proper diet, the ease of stopping to pick up MSG in the form of burgers instead of cooking something nutritious and over all laziness is what I see on a daily basis.
Got a link that says a obesity is caused by disease?
I haven't found it yet.
The only disease I can find that causes obesity are the combination of things I've listed.
Apart from the minuscule percentage that have an underlying health issue that is...and even that can be controlled or at least not exacerbated by visits to McDonalds.
A kid with health issues eating fast foods makes about as much sense as an alcoholic who only drinks in moderation.

I'm not saying that there are not fat children that are simply overweight based on inactivity and food intake...obesity however...i believe is a serious health condition which must have other causes...such as certain bodies absorbing and using foods differently. You know that some people(me)could eat a whole chocolate cake and lose a pound...my sister would gain 3 pounds just smelling it. Everyone's body uses and stores foods differently. Obviously obese people store fat in larger quantities and burn them much slower....I am not saying that the greasy foods and laziness are not exacerbating the problem...simply stating that no child with a normal...healthy body to begin with should be 3 foot tall and weigh 200 lbs. no matter what they eat. Especially not the younger ones. I saw a 4 year old on TV that was over 150lbs. Little kids are not playing XBox and such yet. They get exercise all day cause they love to run and play and tear shit up. They don't even know it's exercise. I think they just like watching mom clean up the mess....lol. So...no I can't believe that toddlers are obese out of mere laziness and bad diet...NO WAY!!!
And sorry...don't know what fork means:squigglemouth:

Now we're getting somewhere.
B y the way, forking a thread means that when you see a post that you want to comment on but it is not necessarily on the same topic as the thread you find it in, you push this button:
809
and it'll carry that post, along with your comments and make a whole new thread.
This is usually expected when the Original Poster (OP) has a Do Not Hijack tag in their thread. (Meaning they want discussion to be kept strictly to the topic at hand.)

If a kid wants some thing, there mind set on it, there is two things most parents do. One cave in and give em what they want all the time. Two stand there ground and upset the kid for a few minutes. If they cave in and the kid gets fat, I don't think it should be child abuse, but I do think the parents should be held responsible for the child's death if he dies while young from over eating.

WOW!!! Don't ya think that if a child could actually eat themselves to death...they must have a fucked up body. Seriously...have ya never stuffed yourself so full on holidays that you felt sick. Can ya imagine that a child would do that to themselves everytime? I saw something on"House" before where the child had no sense of feeling. They were not able to feel pleasure or pain, hot or cold, or anything else....Another case was a kid that had some illness where they never felt full or satisfied from food. Their parents had to padlock the fridge and what not because the kid was eating itself to death. Now when these children die....does blame really fall on the parents/caregivers shoulders or is it the fault of the illness? I know Nik will remind how rare the ilnesses are, but I don't believe for a second that it is possible for a normal healthy body to be so far overweight without some other condition causing it. Fat...YES...people/kids they can be fat from overeating, unhealthy eating, and laziness......but Truly OBESE??? No way!!!
I will tell ya that the more I dig...the more "rare diseases" I find that cause obesity...all of them added up... not so rare anymore
