I love tv shows about the legal system, from all sides, meaning from the criminal to the cops who arrest them to the courts. I know we have a law student on site and I'm curious as to how close these shows if any are to the actual workings of the legal system.
Anybody can chime in of course, even if its just to name a favorite show.A few of my favorites are:
Law & Order : all three shows
N.C.I.S.
Cold Case
Missing
I used to like the C.S.I. shows but I guess I got tired of them.

I've heard "The Shield" is supposed to be very lifelike regarding law enforcement, but I've never seen it

I've never watched it, the guy that plays in it just don't come off as a tough cop to me.

I swear my parents made me watch that shit because they knew I'd be in front of a judge one day.
The first 48 is cool.
Notice the detectives and ADA's don't look anything like the ones on Law & Order?
I like Law & Order, except that you can usually figure out how it's going to turn out.

I forgot another show I like, Saving Grace. Comes on TNT.
I used to like the shield, but then they kept moving the date and time around, and once you start missing episodes, it was hard to follow.

NYPD Blue used to be an addiction of mine.
I just saw the "Is it because I'm a lesbian" episode of law & order.
That was one thing on that show you never saw coming.

I never could understand the concept of Medical Examiners taking on the role of detectives, I watched that show but I never could understand it. Is this really how they operate or is that just some Hollywood bullshit?

I don't really know. I haven't taken criminal procedure yet, so I can't even comment on that. I know that if you're not in criminal law, its very unlikely you'll get much trial work. The whole legal system is pretty much designed to settle out of court.
I have a friend that's one of the chief prosecutors in King County, Washington (that's in Blood's neck of the woods). He's been a prosecutor for 30 years now. He was involved in the Green River Killer's prosecution. He says that not much on tv is close to real life. He's got some really fucking creepy stories though. There's some sick puppies out there.
When he got married years ago, I took him to an expensive restaurant for his bachelor party. I know, it wasn't much, but he is a pretty quiet guy. The point of the story is we had been doing a lot of drinking. So when I end up driving home, I ask him what will happen if I get pulled over for drunken driving? He said, "nothing, I'll make sure it doesn't get prosecuted."
I don't know if that's what would've happened or not, but it sounded pretty good at the time. Fortunately, I didn't get pulled over.
The "Down low" was pretty funny. It's kind of like why I never got into the CSI shows, because ythey make it seem so educational. This came off like a horrible after school special.
