Can't paint over it. It's a nubby woven silk, glued on, as opposed to the "dip in water and hang" kind. So the top layer is coming off but leaving the paper backing securely glued to the wall, which, even after soaking with DIF remover is coming off in tiny tedious pieces and taking some orange peel off the drywall. One of those simple little projects that just keeps growing.

There is a tool for stripping wallpaper. It's a little hand held roller thing that perforates the wallpaper. Apply steam after that and the wall paper will come right off. The steam is the problem. They make a steamer that's used for this, but finding one to rent might be a problem. If it's a small area, you might be able to use a steam iron, but a hand held steamer would work best.

Good luck.

Finishing the sheetrock isn't all that hard, just time consuming and messy. Tip, use the biggest/widest floating knife.

Yeah, I have the perforator thingie and I tried steam. I've stripped lots of paper. This is different. I've never had the plaster texture soften and fall off like this. I don't think the wall was properly prepped before the paper was hung. Plus it's heavy duty paste. The problem with remudding is, it was that sprayed-on orange peel texture, not smooth. I'm going to try the $14.00 aerosol can of spray, and if I can't get it to match the other walls, I'll have to hire a pro.

Sorry Chi, I didn't know the level of your experience with removing wall paper, so I assumed and made an ass out of myself.

What's under the texture? If it's wall board, just remove the texture by wetting it and scraping it off. It's not really hard, if it's the same kind of stuff they put on ceilings.

If all else fails, have you thought about covering it with a thin layer of wallboard?

Not at all, Baldy, I appreciate your help.

It's drywall with sprayed texture and spray painted and then wallpapered. Usually walls have more layers of paint on them, beyond the new construction spray, before they get papered. So the paint was too thin to protect the water-soluble texture from the amount of steam or enzyme liquid necessary to soften the glue. Once I figured all that out, the solution was simple ... dry heat. I held a hot iron on the paper, and it lifted off with the putty knife. Some of the paint remained stuck to the paper but the texture stayed put on the wall, and that's the important part. I've got the damaged wall spackled and sanded, and tomorrow we'll prime it. Things are looking up.

Also happy to hear the project is going better for you. The last house I lived in, before buying the one I'm in now had the wallboard/sheet rock put up in the early 50's. It was a real old house, built somewhere around the early 1800's and had plaster walls originally.

The wall board they put up didn't have beveled edges and it wasn't taped, just butted up together. Before I moved in I hammered down all the joints, taped and mudded the whole house, ceilings and walls. Quite a job, but worth it in the end.

The house I'm in now had wallpaper in the kitchen, dinning room, hall and bathrooms when we moved in. Some was vinyl. A couple of years ago, I removed it all, some had two layers. The bottom layer had been put up when the house was built, so I ran into some of the same as you, not enough paint underneath. Had a lot of patching and floating to do before I could paint.

Good luck with the rest of your project, hope it goes smoothly for you. I wouldn't mind seeing a picture or two if you would care to post them.

You click on a seed which is in the tree..while still pressed,drag downward a little to either direction..the further out you go,the more power you have to "slingshot" the seed when you let go of the left click...The object is to land the seed on the scarecrow,which wakes him up,and he schews the crows away.

I used to not like that game until I got the hang of it..now I love it !! Give a couple practice runs..

As you have seen on my getting older thread, I've been a lot distracted lately.

For a while, I wasn't even checking the threads in this room. I have been playing in the arcade a lot lately to avoid thinking about things.
