Oahu ,Hawaii had a power outtage Dec 26. The entire island was dark. For some the blackout lasted 20 hours. I was one of those lucky 20 hour people.

around 7pm the lights flickered then just went dark. We used cellphone light as a way to navigate the house. Everything in military housing( which is where I live) runs on electric.... so nothing worked.

We are still waiting for our household goods and car to get here... so we stocked up on tv dinners and such. I have loaner furniture that consists of beds, dressers, diningroom table/chairs and sofa.No microwave, no pots or pans.... no utensils. Why is this important? Read on....

Well with no elec, the stove basically the oven was out. So no food for us. No light, no hot water. Lots and lots of monsoon rain.In a new house, no car, no flashlight.... basically shit outta luck.

I watched neighbors, who have their house, who have their car, have necessities( like a radio and flashlight).....and they panicked! They used their radio and flashlights as they ran for their cars. Highbeams and what I could hear from a radio broadcast was all I could see thru the rain.

They drove away... Did they think to check on a neighbor? Did they even once think about anyone besides themselves? no. They just freaked the fuck out and ran . Where were they going? I assume to find power.

The next day , still no power but the sun was rising and we found an ipod thingy in our luggage. Yea! It had a good charge and we were able to get some info . Thank God for local radio. By this time we are checking the charge on our cell phones and such b/c we still didnt know when we would be operational .

The radio said that it was an island wide power outtage. Those people who ran? They had no where to go.... it was black everywhere! Ha ha FUCKERS!

Now on the radio, which is our only outlet to the world ( except cell phones, but didnt want to scare family stateside... or waste the charge just in case) people kept calling in in a tizzy about stupid shit. How do I make sure my fish survive..... is the food in my refrig still good? << these people have their homes and necessities..... we cant even eat!

Granted there was flooding.. and no elec.... and the rain kept falling....

People got power in bits . Announcements about staying off the roads, no traffic lights, and emergency use for the local highways only...... This lady gets power in her house.... goes to gas station.... calls radio station to complain that she cant get gas! WTF! She is in a panic .She left her house , that has power.. to get on a street that she's not suppose to be on... and bitches about the gas station not being open or even having power yet! WTF!

The tourists? Yeah there was chaos. Most hotels have 20+ floors. No elevators and no light. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall! Rich people taking the stairs.... I like this idea!

What happened that caused this? Lightning hit the power station. And the lightning was causing troubles for the helicopters. The helo's were trying to get up to check on the power lines.

When you have stuff you ignore what you have..... when you have no elec you realize how dependent you are on such things. People in general like hysteria. They feed off of each other in panic. People cant cope w/o their luxuries. people really do fuckin suck!

The power came back on and the rain finally stopped. And we feasted!
( then plugged everything in to get it fully charged)

Still as chipper as ever I see, I have experienced the no power thing.A few hurricane seasons back we lived off of a generator for 3 weeks while hundreds of volunteer electric workers scurried about the state repairing power lines. Not all people suck.

Last winter, we had a terrible ice storm which knocked out power for up to 3-4 weeks in some of the surrounding communities. People were damn cold, really hungry, and so sick of their families that they considered eating them.

Good on you deems for keeping your cool.

Could these people who were frantic be guilty of piss poor preparation ?And that lady that was bitching about the gas station not being open..just plain ignorant.

No one anticipated lightning hiting the power station. The safety measures installed failed. But the defaults held. It could have been worse.

It was only 20 hours, not too bad..... but still it was disheartening. Having a hungry kid didnt make it any easier.

As of yesterday, there's still some flooding and a few streets are still under water.

What gets me... is that unless you are geting paid or having some benefit from something most people only do for themselves. Granted, Im not legal in Hawaii( b/c I have to get my med license transferred to here) but my ass was outside on the front porch watching to see if everyone was OK. No one came outside unless running for their cars.

Im dumbfounded at the lack of "give-a-shit" .

We lost power for a week during the freeze and did just fine. We adapted. I did things the old fashion way. With real fire to cook with and fired up the old fire place. Cooked and ate like nothing ever happen. Country boy can survive.
