Kind of amazing how fast it fell out of the news. Especially because of the size.
I've been through a lot of earthquakes, and that was a big one. fortunately, since where is was center, it was a very long one, and a sliding back & forth & rolling type. It was kind of like if you were standing in the back of a truck, and someone was taking of & stopping. Not real fast, but just enough to make you fall over if you're not paying attention.
If the epicenter would have been in LA, we would be watching a different news story, cause it really was large.
It was bigger than the recent Haiti quake.
It was also bigger than the Loma Prieta quake in SanFrancisco in 1989 that collapsed the freeway. That one killed 63 people. It was only a 6.9

Was also bigger than the Northridge Quake
That one was 6.7, and killed 72 people.
That one did a hell of a lot of damage. Thats the difference between a rolling/sliding quake, and a rolling/sliding quake that stops or starts abruptly.

Ripped up the streets too

Sadly, one of the first casualties was a LAPD officer heading to work because he knew there would more than likely be trouble. He found a collapsed freeway interchange the hard way. Doing 80 in the dark on a motorcycle.
That interchange also collapsed in the huge Sylmar quake of 1971 that killed 65 people.
That one was only a 6.6
The biggest shame was that i wasn't at disneyland, because to watch a bunch of foreigners running around in circles and screaming like Godzilla is attacking would have been funny as hell. not to mention telling them the world is ending, and we have 5 minutes to hump before armageddon.
I should also take this moment to enlighten the tourists. Do NOT run outside in a quake. Almost everything is wood here, and it is rare to have a collapse. On the other hand, something falling could easily do your ass in. Especially since it can cause something of ANY weight to fall.
Keep in mind, the first reported fatality of this quake was some fool that ran outside and became a hood ornament.
