In this picture provided by the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, shows octopus Paul swimming next to a golden cup similar to the World Cup trophy Monday July 12, 2010. No more World Cup, no more octopus oracle. Paul, the octopus who became a pop culture sensation by correctly predicting the outcome of as many World Cup matches as he has legs - all seven of Germany's games plus the Spain-Netherlands final - is going to retire. However, Paul took one last curtain call on Monday. Aquarium employees presented the octopus with a golden cup - similar to the official World Cup trophy.
BERLIN — Octopus oracle Paul's prescience wasn't needed to predict how this one would turn out: His aquarium in Germany on Friday gave a resounding "nein" to a bid to move the celebrity mollusk to Spain.

Paul rose from obscurity in Oberhausen's Sea Life aquarium during the World Cup to international celebrity as he correctly called the outcome of Germany's seven matches in the monthlong tournament, time and again picking a mussel from a tank marked with the flag of the would-be winner.

He also correctly predicted Spain would beat Germany in the semifinals _ prompting many in his home country to speculate how he would taste grilled in garlic butter.

Already a celebrity in Spain after the semifinal prediction _ Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero offered to send a security team to protect the 2 1/2-year-old floppy octopus from the hungry Germans _ the country went wild for him after he correctly tipped Spain over the Netherlands in the finals.

Paul is now so popular in Spain that a northwestern Spanish town tried to borrow him. Officials in O Caraballino, population 14,000, declared that the octopus is their "honorary friend" and wanted Paul's presence to promote a seafood festival, the Faro de Vigo newspaper said.

A businessman from the town also offered euro30,000 ($40,000) to buy Paul, but the newspaper said Sea Life declined.

In response to hundreds of requests to bring Paul to Spain, the Madrid Zoo this week asked Sea Life if it would be willing to make a deal to bring him in as a tribute to the Spanish football team's victory.

"They brought the World Cup, we bring Paul," zoo spokeswoman Amparo Fernandez told The Associated Press. "He's a symbol of this championship."

She said the zoo had asked for Paul to come on either a temporary or permanent basis, and had proposed an exchange of animals. She said no financial offer had been made, but that it would be considered if necessary

This is the first I had heard anything about this.. pretty cool, I think

Cool, thanks, bro.

It's really kinda cool how nature works, isn't it?

I mean, I don't think there's any SANE individual out there in the world who actually thinks an Octopus can predict the future.. I think it just happened to like one flag over another on the outside of the container..

I'm just not buying the possibility of an Octopus being able to predict the future

I'd like to be
under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in,
knows where we've been
In his octopus' garden in the shade

I'm living under the assumption that nothing or nobody can predict the future.

How do you explain Nostradamus?

What "detailed" happening has Nostradamus ever predicted?

I mean I can sit here and say that some "disasterous" earthquake or flood or war will happen in the next 12 months,..and most likely,..it will happen.

Vague guessablilty is not future predicting.

Maybe he did.. but, what could he do about it? I mean, he was an Octopus.. stuck in a glass tank for Christs sake! Actually, he did live to a rather ripe old age

Some have been known to live up to 30 years.

I wonder if they mated it.

Reproduction is a cause of death: males can only live for a few months after mating, and females die shortly after their eggs hatch.

What a bitch, eh?

Celibacy means a long life...mating is sure death...

Fuck bein an octopuss when I reincarnate.

Psychic football tipping octopus' replacement unveiled

Paul had a knack for tipping his tentacles off the winning team

Although Paul the "psychic" octopus is barely cold in his watery grave, Germany has unveiled octopus Paul II as his successor. But will the new creature amass the thousands of fans and huge Facebook following as the first Paul?

The invertebrate's predicting predecessor, Paul the first, wowed viewers of the last World Cup with his accurate games predictions - which garnered him thousands of Facebook followers the world over via several fan pages.

The new octopus carries the name of his late predecessor and was introduced to his aquarium in Oberhause, Germany, before TV cameras. No word yet if Paul II also has psychic abilities.
