Could possibly be the biggest "unknown" rock star of all times

Has connections to everyone from Kiss to Frankie goes to hollywood. The band he was in had hits, he himself has had hits. His written and/or produced other huge hits, for huge people/bands, Over numerous decades.

Was a rockstar before mtv, and was played to death on MTV.

For a big hint, "You thought he was black"

Not Michael Macdonald. But he played in a band, that palyed with some in a band Macdonald played in.

But then he also played with someone in a band, that played with someone in a band, that played with someone in Van Halen.

Maybe I should give easier hints?

"He has the same last name as Phil Hartman"

The guy really was diverse.

Some of you may have heard this song once or twice

Or this one

"Playing with a gun"

(I said he was dead, not by the gun though)

YouTube - EDGAR WINTER BAND & RICK DERRINGER , 1973

This song was what I meant by thinking he was black, since MTV played the vid to death, with the black guy singing.

YouTube - DAN HARTMAN - I CAN DREAM ABOUT YOU

Kind of odd they didn't figure out he was gay til after he was dead

YouTube - Dan Hartman - Instant Replay

A quick google will link him from everyone from 38 special, to James Brown.
