HUNTINGTON BEACH – A man who said he likes to "torture, kill and mutilate" was recently released after a court hearing declaring him not gravely disabled and his whereabouts are unknown, according to a Huntington Beach police bulletin obtained by the Register.
Gregory L. Craven, 34, went into the Wal-Mart at Beach Boulevard and Talbert Avenue in Huntington Beach on Nov. 26 and chopped off his third and fourth fingers on his left hand with an ax and cutting boards, police officials said. Craven then check himself into Huntington Beach Hospital where police kept him for observation for 72 hours, police said.
During an interview with an Orange County public guardian, Craven said he, "enjoys pain and would like to inflict it on others." He stated that he wants to tie people up, rape and cut off body parts, according to the Jan. 14 bulletin, which was not intended for public release.
Doctors at UCI’s psychiatric hospital found him not gravely disabled after about three weeks of observation and said he should not be detained, police said.
During a court hearing Jan. 15, Craven was not found to be gravely disabled and released. Police do not know Craven's whereabouts and are not searching for him, Huntington Beach police Lt. Russell Reinhart said today.
"He has been evaluated and they said he is OK to be released," Reinhart said. "He has been living in our city for some time and ... he has never hurt anybody in the past. What he did was to himself."
Police officials are unsure how the notice was distributed in the public, but Reinhart said they have received about a dozen phone calls from concerned residents. The flyer, which includes a photo of Craven, who has tattoos on his arm and chest, was also sent to several school groups, Reinhart said.
"If he is walking down the street we are not going to arrest him or stop him," Reinhart said. "He is just a free person walking around."
