Yesterday evening my water pump shit the bed, dumping the entire contents of my coolant system onto the parking lot of the local grocery store.

This morning I popped the hood to assess the damage.

This is what I saw;

397

There may just be a problem here. :xd:

Upon removal I discovered that the bearings had gone, causing the actual pump mechanism to act as something of a mill, chewing it's way into the engine block, and through the pump body itself.

Check it out;

398
399

(Yeah, that's my dirty fingernail.)

The job took me about 2 1/2 hrs, and I encountered no major problems. Can you believe that shit?

Why is your power stearing pump all out of whack in that second pic?

And that took you 2 and a half hours? It's right there in front easy to get too?

You answered your own question. The power steering pump was in front of a couple of the mounting bolts. And it is NOT right in front, it's on the fender wall. The clearance you see is distorted by the camera. I had exactly 3.5" to work in.

Yes it did, and I fear it will, but short of replacing the engine block, what can you do. Everything seems to have sealed properly, so all I can do is hope it holds up.

Damn is that your new ride?? What a pain in the ass!!
You should definately hit up one of those old car junk yards and see if you cant find another block for cheap there just in case.
Will keep my fingers crossed for you though!!

3 and a half inches is why it took 2 1/2 hrs. Next time spend 15 minutes taking the radiator out first.

On most cars, you have to remove something to get to something else. It's the nature of the beast.

Dude, in the same post I also mentioned that it is on the fender wall. Removing the radiator would have been a monumental waste of time.

The only thing I could have done to speed up the process would have been to release three of the four motor mounts and jack the engine up to provide better visibility, and easier access.

That hardly seemed worth it to me. Call me crazy...

If that damage to the block gives you even the slightest concerns for the future, sell the vehicle, trade it in or whatever.

I have consulted a number of professional mechanics on it today actually. The damage, not being on the sealing surface, is merely cosmetic. My worries have been negated. Thankfully.

I used to love working on vehicles, hate it now. I take it to a trusted garage now.

Still work on restoring old bikes though - when I can afford it !!

I have never enjoyed it myself, but a garage charges $40-$80 per hour for labor. I'm too cheep/poor for all of that. lol

As long as it don't involve working inside the block I'll do it myself, fuck paying somebody else to do what I can do myself.
