Parents arrested for strapping kids to roof of car after leaving liquor store.

Two Northern Indiana parents were arrested Monday after police said they strapped their four children to the roof of their car.

Fort Wayne Police were called to the Belmont Beverage liquor store in the 2100 block of Fairfield Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Witnesses said the parents had visited the liquor store before driving off.

A U.S. Marshall reportedly spotted the car traveling on Fairfield near the liquor store. The couple was immediately pulled over.

The male driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, among other charges. The female passenger was taken to police headquarters for questioning.

The children - ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 - are now in protective custody.

Old Friends

I grew up in a small town, still live there, because I've never found a place that I liked better, plus I still have family and friends here.

Our school was a 1st - 12th grade school. Only about 300 students total at any time. It was built in 1939 and burned down in an accidental fire in Jan. of 1969, when I was in the 10th grade.

Most of us that went to school there, have a bond, a love of the school. It was special. Most of us feel the same way about our town, it was and is a special place. Unfortunately, being such a small town, there's not a lot of good jobs to be had, so many have had to move away to make a living.

This past weekend, we had a School reunion. Anyone that ever went to school there was invited. We had a little over 150 people show up. We mostly organized it and contacted people thru Face Book.

People came "home" from all over the country to renew old friendships and see old classmates. We all had so much fun, it's hard to put into words the pure pleasure that we felt, seeing people, some of whom, we haven't seen in 30 to 40 years. People that played a big part in our early lives.

One old friend in particular comes to mind, Greg, whom I had met and became friends with when we were about 12. We were pretty close for many years. We both got married, me earlier than him. A few years after he met and married his wife, she was involved in a bad accident and was hurt pretty badly. She needed several surgeries and they decided to move to Atlanta to be nearer to her Dr and the hospital that he worked with. Not long after that, we lost touch and we hadn't talked for about 30 years.

About six months ago, his wife died after a short illness. He was devastated by her loss and became very lonely. His son (who's now a young adult) encouraged him to get on Face Book and try to reconnect with his old friends, thinking it would help pull him out of his depression. He did and he reconnected with a lot of us. We were already planning the reunion and he was looking forward to coming and seeing all of us again. (Atlanta is about seven hrs away by car.)

Around the middle of last month, he discovered he had lung cancer and that it was pretty advanced. He started treatment, both chemo and radiation and was starting to feel much better, so he decided that he was still going to come home for the reunion. His son drove him here last Friday and we had our reunion Sat night at a local Marina.

The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold, just enough wind to keep the bugs from getting too bad. The food was wonderful, the music was perfect. Everyone had a great time. Greg and I talked and the years melted away and it was like we were 18 again, remembering the good times we had had together.

The next morning, Greg and I and a few others got together for breakfast at a local restaurant, before he and his son left to return to Atlanta. Before he left town, he and his son spread some of his wife's ashes on the River that we all love so much.

Seeing him and getting to spend time with my old friend warmed my heart and made a great reunion even better.

He passed away this morning. Rest in Peace my friend.
